To the uninitiated, it was nothing more than dust and ruin. But to him, it was the center of something that officially didn’t exist. He arrived there in the winter of 1974, hauling a duffel bag, a toolbox, and orders so vague they could’ve meant anything. The project had already ended by then, at least on paper. The contractors had been reassigned, the oversight committees dissolved, the scientists long gone. Only the infrastructure remained — half-buried antenna arrays, hangars filled with obsolete equipment, a humming generator that had outlasted every justification for its noise. Someone had to keep it alive, or at least keep it quiet. That someone became him. For years, the man without a name became the desert’s only custodian. He tuned the transmitters by starlight, replaced cables frayed by sand and wind, logged signals that had no origin and no destination. Some nights he would sit by the array’s base, watching the desert bleed into the horizon, and listen to the low electric hum that never stopped. The world beyond the Dry Bed carried on — elections, wars, televised triumphs — but out here, reality felt thin, like the background radiation...
