Johann Sebastian Bach&Johannes Passion, BWV 245, performed by Collegium Vocale Gent, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe, with English subtitles. Recorded on Friday 13th March 2020 at the Concertgebouw Bruges. As this performance is a rehearsal, it¬ as polished as the commercially available recordings conducted by Herreweghe, Gardiner, Jacobs, et al. However, the playing is lucid, the choral singing is very good, and the individual performances are powerful indeed. The informal setting, in my opinion, also allows one to relate much more personally to the characters (and the players), and achieves something that commercial recordings inevitably cannot do. All in all, I suspect that Bach himself would have regarded this performance as closer to his original intentions. This video is available elsewhere, but others unfortunately suffer from a one-minute silence in an early stage of the performance. I haven&been able to find the audio to fix the problem, and so I&slotted in a section from a video of the same work performed at the London Proms by the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. The inserted one-minute section is the nearest appproximation of the lost audio in terms of timing, and I hope it&better than nothing (my edit, that is - the Gardiner recording is of course excellent). The dubbing is discerable, mainly via lip-sync issues, but some may find it better than an abrupt silence when they&trying to get into the story.
