Thus when the sun from&wat&bed from the oratorio Samson, HWV 57 (1743) by George Frederic Handel (1685-1759) Anthony Rolfe Johnson, tenor Concentus musicus Wien under Nikolaus Harnoncourt The role of Samson was created by John Beard (c. 1716-1791), an English tenor best remembered for creating an extensive number of roles in Handel&operas and oratorios. The libretto by Newburgh Hamilton is based on "Samson Agonistes" by John Milton (1608-1674), which in turn was based on the Biblical account of Samson.
