On a cloudy fall October day, we ventured out to the Strasburg Rail Road with Stovell Productions to catch Norfolk & Western no. 475 in action with a Southern Pacific 6-Chime Whistle. The whistle was equipped a few days earlier. N&W 475 History: 475 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA in June 1906. 475 worked for the Norfolk and Western Railway since it was built and was designated as an "M" class locomotive. 475 was retired from the N&W roster in 1956. In 1957, it was temporarily brought back to service with a fake diamond stack and an oil headlamp for the "Salem Shifter" passenger train. After escaping the scrappers torch in 1962 and being passed through several owners, 475 was purchased by the Strasburg Rail Road in 1991. By 1993, 475 was restored to operating conditions. 475 is currently the oldest operating locomotive on Strasburg Rail Road&roster and is the only 4-8-0 steam locomotive in operation in North America.
