After several years of going astray, the and Defence decided in 1985 to acquire new aircraft. In 1986 it was decided that it would be the The first two (Ver. 9.12B) and the bipedal MiG-29UB (9.51B), NATO code "landed at Batajnica airport on 24 September 1987, with the Soviet crew landing in Hungary. Here is a model kit, scale 1:48, of a MiG 29, from the 34th production series, manufactured on 11 December 1987 (3410), marked as L-18 number 18101, flying in the 204th LAP Fighter Air Regiment, 1989 at Batajnica, near Belgrade. During the NATO-led Operation 127.LAE personnel worked feverishly in late March to restore several non-operational MiG 29s to operational readiness. The 18101 was the first to be made airworthy and Major Bora Zoraja flew a single mission with it on 5 April, but it too had several malfunctions and returned safely without engaging an enemy. The engineers dismantled the damaged 18104 to obtain spare parts to repair the 18101, but on its next mission, two days later, the aircraft continued to suffer from similar problems, and the pilot, Major Milenkovic, returned to base without taking part in combat. This marked the end of the war for the 127th LAE, which by this time had lost six MiG-29s in air combat, one of which was badly damaged, while the remaining aircraft with the 18101 continued to be used for air policing duties.
