In this video I&restoring the hood hinges of my 1973 Datsun 240Z. When I did the panel alignement on the hood of the car, I had to realize that both hinges were worn out. The had enormous play when the hood was closed. The movement in the hinges was around 2cm (3/4 inch) up and down. Installing the torsion bars did eliminate the loose play, but they just pushed all the play upwards, means I could still push the hood down the 2cm. This was especially an issue, because I could not even lower the hood enough to align it with the head light buckets and fenders. The hood was just sitting too high. There was only one solution, to restore the hinges. After disassembly, I first sandblasted all the parts. Then I straigthend all the segments, drilled all holes 1mm bigger and reamed them for a nice and accurate hole. I&also filed all the contours clean to remove the nasty fabrication marks from the punching. After that I chamfered everything and removed all the sharp edges. Then it was time to make 14 new little shafts for the joints. I was sure to measure all the thickness of the parts and diameters to make the new parts fit as tight as possible, yet still having enough play to move. For proper rust protection and also keep the originality to the parts I gave them all for yellow zinc plating to a local company. For the reassembly I didn&apply any grease, because I also plan to paint the hinges in car color like it was originally. Having grease in the joints could mess the paint job...
