In summer, the most delightful treasures are these native little cherries—only as big as a fingernail, glowing a translucent red, as if they’ve trapped the whole of spring sunshine beneath their thin skins. These little cherries don’t keep well; those picked in the morning wilt by noon. That’s why we always eat them freshly picked, stuffing handfuls straight into our mouths. The flesh is so thin it bursts with a single bite, spraying your mouth with tangy, sweet juice. If you want to enjoy them longer, we’ll cook them into jam or freeze them—then they’ll last for half a year. This way, the joy of eating cherries can extend even further. Hello, everyone!
