Located in the Southwest corner of Colorado, the Durango and Silverton is one of America’s premiere steam tourist railroads. For many years, the railroad hosted an annual Railfest event in August, featuring visiting equipment and special excursions. Two regulars at this event were Denver and Rio Grande Western number 315 and Eureka and Palisade Number 4, the Eureka, an 1875 built 4-4-0 wood burning steam locomotive. Over the years, I visited the railroad several times during Railfest. In 2011, the railroad operated a special all day photo trip with K-28 type steam locomotive number 478 pulling a recreated passenger train from the mid to late 1920s, when the Rio Grande began painting their cars in pullman green, rather than red. In this video, we’ll go back to see this special photo train as well as Eureka Number 4 on a trip to Cascade Canyon. We’ll also see the DRGW number 315 on an excursion from Silverton to Durango during the 2013 Railfest Event.
