The big one for Lesley Gore - a UK way back in 1963. We Brits were usually the ones to do the cover versions in those days, but in this instance it was UK star Helen Shapiro who recorded this song first! Meanwhile Lesley is yet another example of a US star who had way, way more success in her native America than over here. In the USA, she notched up an amazing SEVENTEEN singles in the Top 100 (plus another handful that didn&quite make it so high). Here in Britain, she had just TWO chart hits. Result? Everybody over here knows this song, but I bet many would struggle to name the artist in a pop quiz!
