In just over two and a half hours you can cross the country in comfort, watching villages, rice fields, and mountains sweep past your window. On a clear day, Mt Fuji makes a perfect cameo. The ride is smooth, quiet, and so relaxing you forget you are moving at 320 kilometres per hour. Unlike flying, there is no airport dash or long trip into the city. You arrive right in the heart of it, often just minutes from your hotel. With the Japan Rail Pass, the Shinkansen is more than transport, it is part of the adventure.
