 The trident maple ( Acer burgerianum ) is one of the most favored trees 
for Bonsai in Japan. The trunk is whitish and straight and the leaves 
having 3 short lobes are lustrous.
 
Here are three splendid Bonsai of trident maple grown by Mr. Murata. In the pot of the first Bonsai 15 slim trunks are standing in a line and form 
a sort of　grove. This style of Bonsai is called &Yose-ue&in Japan. 
The second is a dome-shaped single tree, the base is sturdy and the 
branches are ramified at the top, which are not so fine as those of general 
Japanese maple ( Acer palmatum ) but somewhat like tough needles.
 The last one of majestic figure used to be owned by Hayato Ikeda, the 
Japanese prime minister in the 1960& The figure silhouetted against the evening sky in late autumn is magnificent.
 トウカエデ（唐楓）は Bonsai の素材としてたいへん人気のある木です。
幹は白く、真っ直ぐで、3裂した葉には光沢があり、この葉形から
「サンカクカエデ」ともよばれます。 ここでは、九霞園の村田さんが大切に育ててきた3杯のトウカエデの Bonsai を紹介しています。 最初は15本のほっそりした幹が木立を形作っている寄せ植え。 
2つ目は、樹冠がドームのようになった一本立ち。無数に分かれた枝先は
イロハモミジのように繊細ではなく、まるで針の山のように強靱です。 最後は、かつて池田勇人首相が所有していた堂々たる風姿の Bonsai で、
晩秋の光を背景に浮かび上がるシルエットは圧巻の眺めです。
