Today I played Vasily Kalinnikov’s Nocturne in FI know nothing of his Slovenian background and it is my first time playing anything by him. After I researched some recordings to compare my interpretations I realized he died at age 34 - The piece took on a different meaning after that and I felt I could empathize with the feelings of the piece. To me it is lightly early Scriabin in the start, like his Prelude in A-minor or Prelude for the LH, and the tonality is a Scriabin commonality as well. The middle section takes on a different, more Romantic atmosphere, and has some parts where I thought the phrasing was not easy to pull off. He’s written a lot of other music which seems to be represented on YouTube, however this piece seems to be one of the more popular choices. Performed with Remembrance to Cziffra, born on this day. Other piano works by Kilinnikov: Scherzo in Eb-minor (aka 'Moderato') Waltz in A-major Menuet in E-major Chanson Triste Elegie in Bb-minor
