Italian immigrant Gino Micelli (Anthony Quinn) started with virtually nothing, which Gino has now built up into a successful northern Nevada sheep farming operation with his brother Alberto (Joseph Calleia) and their longtime hand Bene (Anthony Franciosa). Gino hired Bene when he was just a boy and treats him like a son, planning on giving him the entire operation when the time comes. As Gino&wife has long passed, he has made the decision to marry his wife&sister Gioia (Ana Magnani) in Italy, without the two ever even having met before. As hard as Gino tries to please Gioia, his efforts always seem to be what he wants for her and not what she really wants. And while Gioia wants to be treated like a true human being and not the spirit of her dead sister, she also does not want her life mapped out for her like Gino seems to have done. Dimitri Zinovievich Tiomkin was born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine. Much of his film music was used to create an atmosphere of broad, sweeping landscapes, with a prominent use of chorus. He was the first film score composer to write both the title theme song and the score."Wild Is the Wind" is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington for the 1957 film Wild Is the Wind. Johnny Mathis recorded the song for the film and released it as a single in November 1957. Mathis recorded the song with a flexible sense of meter, rushing some words as if they were speech.
