HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT Moctezuma Xocoyotzin (Emperor Moctezuma II) November 1, 1466 – June 29, 1520 Biography: If the Aztec Empire was the Rome of Mesoamerica, then Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, also known as Moctezuma II, was its Trajan, leading the empire to its territorial height. After being deceived and captured by Hernán Cortés, in conjunction with the decimation of his reputation, he was killed under foggy circumstances. Though commissioned to serve as a gift for his twentieth anniversary as the empire’s tlatoani, the six lost Aztec Jewel Boards now house pieces of a stone tablet, theorized to detail the pillaging of Tenochtitlan by Cortés and his forces and the humiliation of Moctezuma II. Genealogical Notes: Married María Miahuaxochitl on October 16, 1502. Married Princess Teotlalco on January 6, 1507. Father of Don Pedro and Doña Isabel Moctezuma.
