Baikonur Cosmodrome is a unique complex, consisting of the most complicated technical facilities, the world&first and largest cosmodrome of international significance. It is located in the territory of Kazakhstan close to the village Turatam. The total area of the cosmodrome is 6717 square kilometers. Started to be built on January 12, 1955, Baikonur became a cosmodrome in 1957. In the 1970s and 1980s it was the largest cosmodrome of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s the spaceport was departed from Kazakhstan. Now it is rented by Russia until 2050. The world&first artificial earth satellite (October 4, 1957) and the world&first artificial satellites of the Sun, Moon and Venus were launched from Baikonur.
