Chernobrovaya (Black-browed, "beautiful"). Cossack song from south Russia. By ensemble "Bereginya", Astrakhan, south Russia. The song is sang in Russian (with Ukrainian phonetc feature pronouncing h instead of ). Also the subject and motives of the song are traditional Ukrainian, just as, very much the culture of Astrakhan cossacks, as depicted on the card, that I have created. Left: historic image of Kyzliar (Caspian) and Astrakhan cossacks. South Russia was heavily Ukrainian in the past (Voronezh, Belgorod, Kursk, Volgograd, Rostov, Astrakhan, Stravropol, Kuban regions) with Ukrainian population numbering many millions. Now the area is totally russified but the Ukrainian cultural traditions remain, especially in cossack culture and local dialect which contains many Ukrainian features. Also the closest maternal genetic relatives of ethnic south Russians (i.e. of Tambov region) are Ukrainians (1), Poles (2) and Germans (3). Northern Russians are very different, being the closest to Baltic and Finno-Ugric peoples.
