Polyvinyl chloride, commonly abbreviated PVC, is a thermoplastic polymer and the most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer. Polyvinyl chloride is produced by polymerization of the vinyl chloride monomer. PVC is relatively low cost biological and chemical resistance and workability have resulted in it being used for sewerage pipes and other pipe applications where cost or vulnerability to corrosion limit the use of metal. PVC is commonly used as the insulation on electrical cables.
