I’ll Follow The Sun was recorded on 18 October 1964 along with seven other tracks during a nine hour session. It’s one of Paul’s earliest compositions, from around 1959. They tried to mix up some of the instrumentation on this song, with Ringo tapping his knees for the percussion according to Paul, “On the record we got Ringo to tap his knees. We were thinking in terms of singles and the next one had to always be different. We didn&want to fall into the Supremes trap where they all sounded rather similar, so to that end, we were always keen on having varied instrumentation. Ringo couldn&keep changing his drum kit, but he could change his snare, tap a cardboard box or slap his knees.” (Many Years From Now, Barry Miles) Another notable change in instrumentation is George’s use of the “mud switch” on his Gretsch Tennessean, which muffles or mutes the sound quite a bit. I believe George is using the middle position on the Gretsch for both the basic track’s lead guitar, and the solo overdub, which doesn’t have the mud switch on. The Gretsch part of the song was actually rather annoying to understand because when it was recorded, as I understand it, the Gretsch was not used until the final take take of the song, so George probably hadn’t quite decided what to play yet, and so he switches a lot between strumming full sustained chords and picking notes out of the chord.
