Over the past few years, the Arctic has drawn international attention in terms of potentially becoming an alternative transit region for cargo transportation. Amid the rising global interest towards the Northern routes and passages, Russia is pointing out the obvious transit perks of the Northern Sea Route – the shortest maritime route connecting the European part of Russia with the Far East. Will it be possible to organize a regular shipping line via the Northern Sea Route in a short-to-medium term perspective and will it be viable compared to the existing transit routes?
